Dentists can be just as important as doctors when it comes to your health, which is why choosing a dentist that you can trust is essential. Quality dental care will not only help keep your teeth and smile attractive, but will also prevent, or at least keep to a minimum, pain and discomfort later in life.

To become a dentist, you are required to have at least two years of undergraduate experience on top of four years of dental school; however most dentists have their B.S. or B.A. (which means they attended all four years of undergrad). Those dentists, who then wish to specialize, spend another two years studying their chosen field.

A good dentist should take a personal interest in his or her patients and their health. General check-ups and X-rays of teeth should be common in order to prevent disease. Preventative care can oftentimes be the most important as it ensures that you will need as few major dental procedures done as possible.

A typical check-up includes inspection of the teeth, gums, tongue, lips, inside of the cheek, and the skin of the face and neck along with a cleaning and sometimes X-rays. A good dentist will explain his findings thoroughly and advise you about all of your options if any problems do arise.

If you do need dental work done, higher quality work will usually last a very long time, whereas low-quality work may fall out or decay in a few years. But quality is not necessarily dependant upon price. Find out how meticulous your dentist is; if he takes his time, is careful, and is truly concerned about the outcome, he is probably a good dentist, regardless of price.

Check out a dentists in your area and schedule “get acquainted” visits to determine whether you and your dentist agree about your health and how it should be handled. Talk to him or her about fees and payment plans available, especially if you know you will need a large procedure done. This takes away much of the guesswork on your part as you will know exactly what you will have to pay and when you will have to pay it.

Finally, ask friends, acquaintances, and other local health professionals (like Siebrick.com) for their recommendations. If you know and trust someone who is happy with their dentist or who you think is qualified to point you in the right direction, that is usually one of the best ways to find a professional dentist that you will like. Remember though, that it’s your opinion that matters most, so meet with your prospective dentist to see if you get along and if you see eye to eye when it come to your teeth.
